What are they?

Promotional Posters are available free of charge to IYA Partners (RASC Centres, FAAQ Clubs, University Liaisons, Science Centres, and CASCA Liaisons) who have registered events on the Events Database (see fact sheet, “How to Register Your Events on the IYA Website”)

These beautiful full-colour 11”x17” posters are an eye-catching way to promote your events. They have a blank space to customize with information about your event. They are available in both English and French.

Who are they for?

Everyone!

How do I use them?

Put them in places where they will be seen by lots of people who would be interested in your event. Think about local libraries, schools, colleges, universities, shopping malls, community centres, etc, etc.

Put the posters up two weeks before your event. Time your media contacts so that advance coverage will reinforce the message. Remember that it’s easy to get into small local papers, but that their deadline may be a month or more in advance – plan ahead!

Personalize the posters with information about your event. One easy way is to print stickers that can be affixed to the poster. Remember to include:

•    Name of event – pick something that will explain what it is as well as pique people’s interest

•    Date

•    Start and finish times

•    Location*

•    Your organization’s name

•    A contact ‘phone number and/or e-mail address – people will have questions!

You may want to include information to help people get there – you don’t want them to arrive annoyed because they had trouble finding you! For example: “take bus 36 to Plains Road” or “in the North East corner of the park” or “meet at the statue of Louis Riel”. If it’s in a large building, like a school, be sure to include the room number.

We are supplying you with a good stock of posters, however, depending on the size of your community and the number of events you put on, you may need more (see ordering information below).

You can also print an 11” x 17” or 8 ½” x 11” version of the poster by downloading the file here

If your event is in a large building, like a school, you may want to put up smaller posters with directional arrows to help people find their way (and also the way to the bathrooms, cloakroom, etc)

How do I order copies of the posters?

Promotional Posters are available free of charge to IYA Partners (RASC Centres, FAAQ Clubs, University Liaisons, Science Centres, and CASCA Liaisons) who have registered events on the Events Database (see fact sheet, “How to Register Your Events on the IYA Website”)

1.    If you are an FAAQ club or Quebec organization, please refer to the FAAQ version of this Fact Sheet, which contains information specific to Québec.

2.    Register your event/s on the website www.astronomy2009.ca  (Need help? See Fact Sheet: How to Register Your Events on the IYA Website)

3.    After registering your event/s, send an e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it requesting Promotional Posters, with your full mailing address. Include the name/s and date/s of your event/s so that we can cross reference. If you have more than 5 events registered, simply tell us how many there are and the location.

We are still working out the logistical details on how to order posters subsequent to the first shipment – we will revise this document when these details are known.

4.    After your event, have your designated person go back to the website and report the numbers of people who attended

Reporting attendance is MANDATORY for 2 reasons:

•    Keeping track of numbers will help us to measure the success of IYA and to report to funders. Our ability to do so accurately will attract funders.

•    You will not be able to order new materials until you have reported on your registered events.
